Manter and guardar are synonymous but in some situations we see a very soft difference. Exemples: Eu guardo as minhas roupas no closet (or guarda-roupa : more popular), meaning: (I keep my clothes in the closet). I can't say, Eu mantenho minhas roupas no guarda-roupa. Because in this case manter is to leave the clothes there for a time and guardar is more for 'organize' (I put my clothes in the closed in an organized way- guardar)
Eu mantenho boas notas: I keep good grades. I can't say: Eu guardo boas notas. Because in this situation guardar sounds as to organize
Eu guardo/mantenho lembranças comigo.
I keep memories with me.
Manter- to mantain.
